According to my friends over at Minority Nurse , there are roughly 3.6 million nurses in the United States. Yes, the nursing profession is taking over the overall workforce by leaps and bounds which is a good thing given the constant nursing shortage we face in the U.S. However, there is one common theme that I often see within the nursing community, that I must be honest and admit baffles me at times, and that is we are often not viewed as a dominating force in the industry.
Now Listen, I am just going to be very transparent here and admit that the reason we are not viewed as a dominating force in the industry from the perspective of innovation is because we don't operate as a dominating force! You know sometimes you just have to do like Iyanla and "call a thing a thing", LOL. Seriously we do an AMAZING job at providing patient care to our beloved patients and doing all that we can to restore our patients to a state of wellness, but many of us stop there. We have a hard time thinking outside the box and "going beyond the chart" to really DOMINATE as nurses by going to Capitol Hill to fight for healthcare laws we complain about, developing that documentation software that we really need as clinicians vs. allowing business people to develop our software for us often times with them not knowing the first thing about direct patient care to effectively build a system that is beneficial to us, opening that business that is going to address the alarming high-risk birth rates, HIV/AIDS crisis, etc. that our vulnerable communities are facing from a font-line user perspective. Do you get where I am going with this? We have to get to a place where we are not just existing in the industry as nurses, but DOMINATING in the industry as nurses.
Here Are 4 tips to get you on your journey of DOMINATING in YOUR role as a nurse!
1. Change Your Mindset- Listen I know you have heard this more times than enough and that is because it is TRUE! You can't become who you need to become by remaining who you where in your previous mind. So in order to know that you can do ANYTHING you truly desire you have to change your mindset. It is a daily practice and not an overnight process, but you can and must do this first. ( I talk a lot about this in my book In Health On Purpose! Awakening Your True Calling In The Healthcare Profession and give actionable tips to do so, get your copy HERE if you haven't already done so)
2. Invest In YOURSELF- As nurses we have underwent an enormous amount of training and spent a significant amount of money to get to this place, which leaves many of us saying " I made my investment in me and that is it". Well sorry to tell you this but that was only the beginning if you want to truly dominate in your role as a nurse. So invest in yourself by going to that conference that addresses something you are passionate about, read those books that you know will stir up something in you and help propel you to the next level, if you want to open that business, hire a REPUTABLE business coach, etc.
3. Put In The Work- As nurses, we work hard when we are at work running around like a chicken with our head cut off taking care of our patients and giving them our all, making us want to to absolutely nothing when we do have an off day. However, we have to put in the work to learn that new skill that is needed to help make us better, or write that content for a health related blog that we want to start to educate people on a certain disease process. So whatever you want to do study it, plan for it, then work for it.
4. Get in the RIGHT Network- Your NetWORK determines your NetWORTH. As nurses we tend to network with other nurses and that is fine but we have to broaden our network and mingle with other industries to learn valuable information from them that we can utilize in our role that can assist us. Also having a network that is fearless and hungry will help you grow as a person and a professional which leads to DOMINATION.
